Restless vs Dify.

Dify is a platform for building AI apps, RAG pipelines and agentic workflows. Restless is a place for a team and its agents to run work. One builds the tool, the other is where the work happens.

Dify and Restless both have "agents" and "workflows" on the box, and both are open source and self-hostable, so it's easy to lump them together. But they're really aimed at different jobs. Dify is for building AI apps. Restless is for running work with AI.

What Dify is

Dify is an open-source platform for building LLM applications. It combines a visual workflow canvas, RAG pipelines (taking documents from ingestion through to retrieval), agents that can use tools, marketplace plugins and MCP servers, and support for hundreds of models from many providers, including self-hosted and any OpenAI-compatible model.

It also has LLMOps features: logs, performance monitoring and annotations, so you can improve prompts and datasets from real usage. Its Human Input node can show a draft, accept direct edits, collect feedback and send the work back for a revision. Workspaces support team members.

You can self-host it with Docker Compose or use Dify Cloud. It's under the Dify Open Source License, which is based on Apache 2.0 with some extra conditions.

Where Dify is great

Dify is the better pick for:

  • Building a chatbot, assistant or AI feature that other people will use.
  • Retrieval over your documents, with control over the whole pipeline.
  • Visually designing and versioning AI workflows.
  • Monitoring and improving an AI app in production.

Where Restless is different

Restless isn't a builder for AI apps. It's the office where your team and agents do the work.

  • Owned outcomes. Each piece of work has one accountable lead, and goals survive model swaps, restarts and handoffs.
  • Live co-editing. Teammates write the same rich-text document together in real time, not just review a draft at a step in a workflow.
  • A company computer. Agents work on a persistent Linux machine with Git, a browser and a desktop you can take over.
  • Company identity bound to the work. Restless records which version of your approved facts, voice and visual language each output used, and flags work that relied on something you've since changed.
  • Attention as the budget. Routine coordination stays with the lead. You get a prepared decision.

Can you use both?

Sure. If your company's product is an AI app, Dify could be the thing your agents build and run, while Restless is where the team decides what to build, writes the copy and tests the release. They're different layers.

Honest trade-offs

Dify is far more mature for building and operating AI applications, supports a much wider range of model providers out of the box and has a visual workflow editor, which Restless deliberately doesn't. Restless is a development preview and isn't trying to be an app builder. If you're shipping an AI feature to customers, start with Dify.
